3 Reasons for the elderly to get a flu injection this month

12 October 2016

Autumn is upon us. Leaves are beginning to fall from the trees, nights are drawing in and the temperatures are beginning to drop. The cold and flu season is upon us again. GPs recommend that everyone should get vaccinated before the end of October, but anytime is better than not getting vaccinated at all. Getting a flu jab reduces the chances of our elderly loved ones becoming poorly.

The elderly are most vulnerable at this time of the year, that’s because older adults’ immune systems are weaker due to age. Here at Promedica24, we would like to share with you 3 important reasons why it’s sensible that the elderly should get a flu jab as soon as possible.

1. It can help to avoid serious health complications.

Flu can be a serious illness especially in elderly people and in the worst cases may cause death. 90% of flu-related deaths and more than 50% of flu-related hospital visits occur in people age 65 and over.

2. The jab needs 2 weeks to become effective.

Flu activity starts as early as October. After getting the vaccination, it takes about 2 weeks for the protective flu antibodies to develop in the body.
So, the sooner the elderly person gets vaccinated, the sooner they will be protected against the flu.

3. Getting a flu jab is quick, convenient, and free.

Flu jabs are available free at your GP’s surgery which makes getting a flu jab quick and convenient. The injection is safe and has very few side effects and has been used for many years. You should have received a letter from your local surgery, if not, they can organise it for you if you get in touch.

At Promedica24 our 24 hour live-in care service helps with all these types of care needs; our carer can make all your appointments, drive you to the GP surgery, collect any prescriptions needed from the pharmacy and ensure you have a tasty meal and a nice cuppa when you arrive back at home after your flu vaccination!
