‘Sheila is in my prayers every night’: Life long friends reunited

03 April 2019

Our live-in care service in Dorset organised a special visit for two life long friends, helping them to reunite after over 10 years.

Olive and Sheila, both aged 87 and living in Verwood, receive care and support from Promedica24. The care manager, after listening to stories about their friendship, realised they were both being supported  and organised the reunion.

The pair first met at Verwood Church of England School, where they became firm friends. As they grew up, their friendship blossomed and Sheila and Olive both married and kept in touch.

Sheila worked in a local grocery store and Olive supported her husband in his TV repair store. The friends would visit each other at work to ‘catch up’ and neither would miss special occasions, such as the birth of each other’s children.

Olive had four children and Sheila two, and they also all went to the same school. However, as time passed, their children grew up and had their own families, and both Olive and Sheila’s husbands sadly passed away.

The friends now both receive care and support from a care worker who lives with them in their own homes. Sheila is physically dependant on a hoist so is not able to get out and about on her own, and Olive has reduced mobility due to age related issues.

Due to their health, and the rural location of Verwood, both Olive and Sheila had only been able to talk to each other on the phone, until recently.

Travelling by taxi, Olive and her care worker were safely delivered to Sheila’s home, where Promedica24 Care Manager, Kerry Stevens, had organised an afternoon Tea for Two.

Dorset friends reunited

Kerry commented: “When I realised that we cared for them both I couldn’t wait to organise a reunion. It was so lovely to see their faces light up when they saw each other again, and now that both care workers have also met, they are going to meet monthly for afternoon tea.”

At the Tea for Two Sheila said: “I think about Olive daily, we spent years growing up together and have shared many fond memories.”

Olive was also overwhelmed by the visit, adding: “Sheila is in my prayers every night, it has been amazing to be able to visit and talk about the old days.”

Kerry added: “Loneliness is a real issue for the elderly, and not only are Sheila and Olive receiving companionship from their care workers, but they are now also able to continue to see each other regularly.”
